What This Role Is Really About

Most account manager job descriptions list build relationships and ensure client satisfaction and call it done. Here is what that actually means in practice at our company.

You have a quarterly business review scheduled with a logistics client in Dallas. Before the call you pull their usage data for the past 90 days, identify that they are using only two of the four modules they are paying for, and prepare a one-page summary showing what the unused modules would have saved them in operational costs last quarter based on comparable clients. On the call you walk through their results, ask about upcoming operational changes, and introduce the unused features as a solution to a problem they just described. By the end of the call they have agreed to a pilot expansion. That is what account management looks like here.

You are not waiting for clients to tell you what they need. You are showing up to every interaction having already figured out what their situation is and what the next conversation should be about.

Core Responsibilities

  • Owning 20 to 30 B2B client accounts — primary point of contact for all relationship, renewal, and growth conversations
  • Conducting quarterly business reviews with each account — presenting results, discussing challenges, and identifying expansion opportunities
  • Managing renewal cycles — initiating renewal conversations 90 days before contract end and negotiating terms without defaulting to discounts
  • Identifying upsell and cross-sell opportunities within existing accounts — documenting them in the CRM and converting them through structured outreach
  • Monitoring client health indicators — product usage, support ticket volume, payment patterns — and intervening proactively when a risk signal appears
  • Coordinating with the customer success, product, and billing teams to resolve client issues before they become escalation-level problems
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records in Salesforce or HubSpot — every call, email, and meeting logged with clear next steps

What Makes Someone Successful in This Role

  • You are genuinely curious about your clients businesses — not just their relationship with you, but what pressures they are facing, what their leadership cares about, and what success looks like for them this year
  • You are comfortable with commercial conversations — discussing contract value, renewal terms, and expansion pricing without needing a sales manager to join every call
  • You follow through without needing to be chased — if you said you would send something by Thursday, it goes Thursday
  • You manage your own pipeline — you know which accounts need attention this week, which renewals are 60 days out, and which clients have not responded to your last two outreach attempts
  • You can de-escalate a frustrated client without making promises your company cannot keep

Requirements

  • 2 to 5 years of B2B account management or customer success experience
  • Demonstrated track record of client retention and revenue expansion within an existing account portfolio
  • Experience with CRM tools — Salesforce or HubSpot required
  • Strong presentation skills — you lead QBRs and executive conversations independently
  • Bachelor degree in Business, Marketing, or related field — or equivalent experience
  • Comfortable working remotely and managing relationships entirely through video calls, email, and phone

Compensation

Base salary: $4,500 to $6,500 per month depending on experience and portfolio size. Variable commission: 8 to 12 percent of expansion revenue closed within your portfolio — paid quarterly. On-target total earnings: $72,000 to $95,000 per year for a manager consistently hitting expansion targets. Health, dental, and vision insurance. 401k with 4 percent employer match. 20 days paid time off. Home office stipend of $800 on joining. Annual President Club trip for top account managers.
