Job Summary

Startup Inno is seeking a highly detail-oriented and experienced Remote Payroll Specialist – Multi-State German Tax to manage and execute end-to-end payroll operations for our growing international workforce. This role is critical in ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely payroll processing across multiple German states (Länder), while supporting our remote-first business model.

The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in German payroll regulations, tax compliance, and social security systems, and will act as a trusted partner to HR, Finance, and employees by delivering a seamless payroll experience. Key Responsibilities

  • Manage full-cycle payroll processing for employees across multiple German states.

  • Ensure compliance with German tax laws, social security regulations, and labor legislation.

  • Calculate salaries, bonuses, commissions, overtime, and statutory deductions accurately.

  • Handle payroll-related filings, including income tax, church tax, solidarity surcharge, and social contributions.

  • Maintain employee payroll records and ensure data integrity in HRIS and payroll systems.

  • Liaise with external payroll providers, tax authorities, and social insurance institutions.

  • Support audits and inspections by preparing payroll reports and documentation.

  • Respond to employee payroll queries in a timely and professional manner.

  • Collaborate with HR and Finance teams on onboarding, offboarding, and compensation changes.

  • Stay updated on changes in German payroll, tax laws, and employment regulations.


Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.

  • Proven experience in German payroll processing, preferably in a remote or multinational environment.

  • Strong knowledge of German income tax, social security, and labor law.

  • Experience with payroll software (e.g., DATEV, SAP, ADP, Paychex, or similar).

  • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel and payroll reporting tools.

  • Strong analytical skills with exceptional attention to detail.

  • Excellent communication skills in English; German language proficiency is highly preferred.

  • Ability to handle confidential information with integrity and discretion.


Experience

  • Minimum of 3–5 years of hands-on payroll experience, specifically focused on German payroll.

  • Experience handling payroll for multi-state or distributed workforces.

  • Prior experience in a startup, scale-up, or international organization is an advantage.

  • Exposure to audits, compliance checks, and payroll system implementations is a plus.


Working Hours

  • Full-time, remote position.

  • Standard working hours aligned with Central European Time (CET), with flexibility for global collaboration.

  • Occasional extended hours may be required during payroll cycles or audits.
